The Talmud is one of the foundational texts of Jewish thought and culture. It is also a difficult and complex text with a rich history of transmission and interpretation. In this three part introduction, we will define the Talmud, and explore its historical background, authorship, and transmission (Part I); read selected passages from the Talmud to get a feel for the text itself (Part II); and finally, we will explore the reception of the Talmud - or how and why people have studied the Talmud, from yeshiva students and rabbis to academics across a range of disciplines, and across different periods and regions of the world (Part III). This series is for anybody who is curious about the Talmud, and requires no background knowledge.
