The Jewish response to biblical criticism over the past two and a half centuries has largely reflected the different ways in which Jews have responded to modernity more broadly. This presentation will offer a survey of the different approaches adopted by Jews in the modern era, pointing to the difficulties and challenges posed by the modern historical-critical study of the Hebrew Bible. 

About the Guest Speaker:

Edward Breuer is a native of Montreal, Canada, and received his MA and Phd from Harvard in the field of Jewish intellectual history. He taught at the University of Pennsylvania and Loyola, and then moved with his family to Jerusalem in 2001, where he currently teaches modern Jewish history at Hebrew University.
