An Introduction to Hebrew Scribal Practice
Service Description
We will begin by exploring the traditional laws of safrus, then turn to the mystical dimensions of the craft. Tunni will share his unique scribing practice, involving the physical embodiment of each of the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet. We will make our own quills and be guided through the process of writing each letter according to the Ashkenazi tradition. If we are successful, a personal scribal practice may begin to emerge. If not, we will still have studied under our 22 wondrous teachers. --- 18+ Please note that animal products will be used in this course. --- Tunni Kraus is an interdisciplinary visual artist. Since completing his Master’s degree in Public Art at RMIT in 2010, he has been immersed in non-institutional training — primarily through intensive scribing apprenticeships in Arabic, Chinese and Hebrew. He has been commissioned for large-scale installation works across Australia and internationally, and is currently drawing, scribing and painting in Melbourne.
